The bridge collapse near Malahide.Work has begun on cleaning up the debris. 8208 passes Adamstown pushing the 09:30 from Cork into Heuston. 083 glides past Adamstown with the 12:15 Inchicore-Portlaoise special.

All stations between Cork and Cobh and Cobh Junction and Midleton are covered as planned! A surprise however showed up on Wednesday morning with the 07:55 Cork-Cobh and 08:25 Cobh-Tralee bringing 22000 traction to the Cobh line.Photos are taken of a murky arrival in Glounthaune and a few shots in Cobh. On Thursday morning we travelled to Dublin to photograph the inaugural run of the IWT liner from North Wall-Ballina.076 done the honours sporting stickers to mark the event for the successful introduction of the liner,it being the first container train out of Dublin since 28th July 2005. A few odds and sods were also added to our day!077 worked an 07:50 Waterford-Portlaoise empty relay train while 073 worked a 12:45 Portlaoise-Waterford laden relay train.Also,an unusual sitting of a Laden Timber train in daylight,due to the cancellation of it on Wednesday night! A 4 piece 2600 arrives at Mallow from Tralee on the 09:15 service ex Tralee.I managed to catch the scroll change and get Belfast on the scroll while changing over! All platforms occupied!4x2600 departs to Cork,400* arrives on the 10:30 to Dublin and 22029 prepares to work the 11:25 to Tralee,having taken over te 2600's link. 077 departs Kildare with an empty relay train from Waterford-Portlaoise. 216 blasts past Chooportrie on the 09:30 Cork-Heuston. In horrible weather,079 works the 07:05 Ballina-Waterford laden timber past Chooportrie. 076 works the inaugural IWT liner from North Wall to Ballina.The laden timber can be seen towards the rear of the train! 079 passes Cush with the laen timber,this time in better conditions than at Chooportrie. 073 departs Kildare with a laden relay train from Portlaoise to Waterford. 232 is held near Kildare in order for 073 to access the Waterford branch. 221 departs Heuston with the 20:00 Heuston-Cork,7615+7Mk3s,including 7104 City Gold. 234 arrives at Heuston on the 17:30 Cork-Heuston with the 7602 set.It had replaced a failed Mk4 set earlier!

On route to Midleton,witnessing the salutes as the train passed houses and bridges felt like something of a new life! At Carrigtwohill,Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey unveiled a plaque to the opening of a brand new station at the Carrigtwohill location!After a 5-10 minute pause,the train headed its way for Midleton,where the town came to show their appriaciation for the return of the service!A standing ovation of roughly 2500 people came out to welcome the train to the village!The first one in 25 years! The 4 car set returned to Cork at 13:18 and 30 minutes later the hybrid set 2716+2609 arrived on the first schedualed passenger train! Enjoy. Crowds of people gathered for the first arrival of a train to Midleton in 21 years! 2616 is seen at the rear of the 4 piece set,before departing for Cork a short while later. 2601 departs Midleton for Cork on the first passenger train to leave Midleton. Back at Kent Station,Cork,a station attendee waves off the 14:15 Cork-Midleton which was absolutely wedged,leaving the best of 20 or so passengers behind!

29116 passes Lucan South on the 08:35 Kildare-Heuston Arrow service. 226 whizzes past Shanaderry with the 09:15 Galway-Heuston. 079 is spotted in Portlaoise Per Way yard sitting on top of the Weedsprayer.Photo taken at the Conniberry Level Crossing. 214 passes Cloney with the 12:20 Waterford-Ballina liner. Shortly up the line he is seen again leaving the branch and coming onto the main line at Cherryville Junction. A 22000 on the 14:35 Heuston-Galway crosses the River Barrow. In rotten light,214 crosses the River Barrow on the 12:20 Waterford-Ballina DFDS liner. 082 roars up past Killenard on the 12:00 Ballina-Waterford liner. 082 once again roars past Cloney with the 12:00 Ballina-Waterford DFDS liner. The 17:00 Heuston-Cork crosses the plains of The Curragh. 232 near Cherryville on the 17:10 Heuston-Athlone. 22008 stands at Kildare on the 09:10 Heuston-Galway while 2723/26 stand at Platform 2 on a Limerick-Waterford transfer. 22346 departs Athy on the 11:30 Heuston-Waterford. 082 passes MP61 1/4 between Bagnalstown and Carlow with the 12:20 Waterford-Ballina empty timber. The 12:30 Cork to Heuston is pushed past Cherryville by 225 while 082 awaits clearance to Kildare to run-around. 082 gets the road once the Cork has passed. 082 is now seen in dark conditions crossing the River Barrow,simular conditions to those in the photo of 214.

144 bursts out of Connolly Valeting Plant with the Cravens set and into the wash road in order for No.4 to back on. No.4 sails into Platform 5 on the Sea Breeze to Rosslare. No.4 crosses the River Liffey on its journey to Co.Wexford. And taken from the same bridge as the previous photo,No.4 is seen passing Pearse St. On the return leg,I caught No.4 passing Dun Laoghaire in fine form and keeping to time!

The most excitement of the day was 080 on the laden DFDS ex Waterford and the sole remaining orange livered 201,214,on a rather empty Ex Ballina liner.It ran unusually in the early path today due to engineering works on the Athlone-Westport line.Also worth photographing was the 09:15 ex Galway,232 and Mk3s,which is soon due to go over to railcars. 080 passes Cush with the 07:50 Waterford-Ballina liner. 080 storms up the bank into Kildare to run around on the 07:50 Waterford-Ballina liner... ...and departs for Ballina following the 10:05 empty to Portlaoise. 232 and 7 Mk3s pass Kildare working the 09:15 Galway-Heuston,the only booked Mk3 inbound service for the whole day!! 214 arrives in the loop line at Kildare on the 08:15 Ballina-Waterford liner. 214 is the sole remaining orange 201 class engine in daily service following the withdrawal of 204 from service last week. 214 pips out of the loop line crossing 3 sets of points to access the Down line and head for Waterford.

]]> Tue Jun 30 2009 Trip to The Balkans,17th-28th of June. http://eirerailwayimages.fotopic.net/c1718993.html Hello folks Here is a selection of photos from a recent trip to the Balkans for 11 days to enjoy some loud GM haulage.All days were well spent varying between Slovenia and Croatia.The 664 were the prominent diesel engines to be found in Slovenia working on passenger trains while in Croatia,2062s and 2044s worked a wide variety of loco hauled services. The 2062 class are simular to the Irish 141/181 class,albeit though they are of around 2000hp and hav a 16-567 engine,basically meaning one 2062 sounds and feels like a pair of 141s.They work on the Split line mainly and can be found on various trains more mainland such as the Sarajevo IC train or Vukovar branch train.They also operate the Split overnight train services,appearing on the service from Ogulin to Split as electric engines are the preferred option between Zagreb and Ogulin.They work all Split-Perkovic loco hauled trains too. The 2044 class operate mainly on the Varazdin Line and Osijek-Koprivnica Line.They are quite identical to the Irish 071 class,sounding very simular.To an enthusiast point of view,I reckon Train 995 is best rated for a run with these engines,the 16:56 Kotoriba-Koprivnica. The Slovenian 664 class operate trains between Pragersko and Hodos.The are super-charged 141 class sound-a-likes and are extremely loud and whistly.Anyone who likes a racket,this is a recommended locomotive to travel with. Also to be featured in this collection is the Slovenian 644 class,which sound simular to the Irish A-class I am told,I never heard an A-class before so I am judging from fellow enthusiasts impressions.They have no booked passenger turns but we had a plenty of action with them on a railtour to Koper and various other locations. Also visited on one of the days was the rather run down Bihac line in Bosnia,where a 661(formerly 2061)class was the power provided.They also sound very much like the Irish 141 class.They can be found on services throughout Bosnia and Serbia I believe. Anyway,hope you enjoy the photos,e weather was very mixed,from mid 30s at the start of the trip to fierce thunder and lightening in Split towards the end of the trip.Expenses are also relatively minimal in these locations,havin to deal with only the Croatian Kuna and then Euro's on Slovenia. A great performance by the engine,on time running the whole way up. There are still plenty of life as expected out of the 071-class,thats the ones without the overhaul.The livery however is in rag order but still is a brighter colour than boring railcars hehe. 087 arrives at Westport on the 12:30 ECS from Claremorris. A sight to treasure.2 Mk3s in Westport for the final time until September,or maybe never..? 087 singing peacefully on Westport Platform 2. As we coast into Athlone we meet 078 on standby and 082 connected to 6101 which is on a cradle.Maybe 6101 has now met its fate. A very rare sight indeed.Two mk3 locomotive hauled trains crossing each other.087 awaits the section to Clonydonnin from 234+5 pp+6104 on the 16:05 Heuston-Galway.

Connolly Pilot 147 passes Islandbridge heading for Inchicore to collect some DART bogies. 142 propels the stock into a siding for the day. 147 passes Connolly with the bogie transfer heading for....... Pearse where it is seen departing the Boston Sidings for Fairview depot but has to.... .....await a path behind a DART. 232 unusually passes Stacumny Bridge hauling a laden timber train.The set had operated Westport-Tullamore,having developed problems near Tullamore.It was brought to North Wall for a brief check-up.

City Gold coach 7104 making a rare sight on the Waterford-Limerick Jct line.First class travel,first class engine and first class signalling.Sums it up really. 082 at Cahir picking up the Cahir Choir. 218 stands at Claremorris off the 16:15 Heuston-Ballina FO. 082 having arrived on the 06:50 from Waterford. 082 having fuelled and ran around,has put the consist into P2 for a 5 hour stable. 082 stands at P2. 082 and its unique nameplate. An overview of the coupling,not too commonly practised with Mk3 sets out the West now. 212 outside Claremorris with the 14:25 Westport-Heuston. 3 Mk3 sets at Claremorris.Happens very rarely. 3 Mk3 sets at Claremorris.Happens very rarely. 212 departs Claremorris in lovely sunshine for Dublin. 082 propels out of Claremorris P2 to fuel 7602. 082 running around its train in Portarlington Up loop.Of note,in the morning,we used the Down Loop to run around. 082 backs on having completed the second last run around of its day. 074 ex Works has finally stretched its legs to Thurles for a ballast train duty.

One for the old books!The Wasp boards make a nice creativity to the engine.
